Update on Travis Kelce's
injuries
?Who is Kelce
Travis Michael Kelce, who was born on October 5, 1989, is an NFL tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs as well as a podcaster. In the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Chiefs selected him, and he eventually played for the team in Super Bowls LIV and LVII, scoring a touchdown reception in both victories. At Cincinnati, he played collegiate football. Regarded as one of history's best tight ends
The
younger brother of fellow NFL player Jason Kelce, a center for the Philadelphia
Eagles, and the son of Ed and Donna Kelce, Kelce was born on October 5, 1989,
in Westlake, Ohio. He was a three-sport athlete at Cleveland Heights High
School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, where he was raised. His sports were
baseball, basketball, and football.
?For what is Travis Kelce well-known
Even though
Kelce turns 34 in October, he will likely remain the top tight end in the NFL
until he demonstrates otherwise.
The four-time All-Pro has a very long career and has missed very little time due to injuries. Last season, he played in all 17 games and led the Super Bowl victors with 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Chiefs will have to use every effort to keep Kelce, who is entering his 11th season, on the field.
?How serious is Travis Kelce's injury
With
Chris Jones' holdout threatening to last until the season, the Chiefs already
had a cloud of uncertainty hanging over them heading into Week 1. Now, Patrick
Mahomes and the offense must deal with a separate issue.
As one of
Kansas City's final workouts before Thursday's season opener against the Lions,
All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce suffered an injury during practice on Tuesday.
Kelce
suffered a hyperextended knee and is "uncertain" for Thursday night's
game against the Lions, according to Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who spoke to
reporters on Tuesday.
Reid remarked,
with little specifics, "We'll just see how he does moving forward."
After
that revelation, Chiefs supporters will be holding their breath
because hyperextension is usually a preliminary diagnosis before a
player is evaluated. Reid said Kelce is still being assessed, so there will
probably be another news soon.
Ian
Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the injury isn't anticipated to be a
long-term problem. But it's enough to indicate that Kelce's participation on
Thursday is "in doubt."
Whether
Kelce's injury was caused by non-contact or not is unclear, but Kansas City
didn't need the doubt at this point. The Chiefs already seem to be facing a
Week 1 game without the cornerstone of their defense since Chris Jones is still
away from the team, demanding a new deal.
Kelce's
absence would make younger Chiefs receivers fill the void left by Mahomes'
preferred target.
